Week 13-Essay 2-Art!
At the beginning of the semester, in a discussion post, I said art is a form of expression. Art can be expressed through paintings, dance, music, or any other way. It is a way for artists to put what they are feeling into a physical form. I also mentioned that art can be minimalistic or intricate. Like how Felix Gonzalez-Torres’ clock piece is only two clocks against a plain background while Michelangelo’s “The Last Judgement” contains many intricate details.
From taking this class my idea of Art hasn’t changed instead I think it’s expanded. Before this class, I wouldn’t have considered an architect an artist, however after we did the Architecture and Urban Planning Unit I could see how architects are artists. After researching different artists I was also able to see different types of art that I didn’t know existed like screen-printing or cardboard sculptures. Now that it’s the end of the semester I still believe art is a way for artists to express themselves and put their emotions into a physical form.
Currently, my major is Kinesiology: Exercise Science. Basically, for my major, I study the body and how it moves. I am not a hundred percent sure what career I want to follow since there are many different options for Kinesiology majors. However, right now my top two are either physical therapy or chiropractor. The only way I can think of art being used in my career is when I use diagrams to show patients where and what is wrong with their bodies. I can also use videos to show how treatment or exercises should be done. Not only can I use art but, the patient can as well. They can take photos over time to show how they are progressing through treatment. For the Architecture and Urban Planning unit, some classmates suggested I can use the maps or blueprints of buildings and cities to show patients the best way to get by.
There are many ways that I enjoy art. To start off I enjoy painting, I haven’t done it as much as I hope but it will always be one of my favorite pass time. Besides painting, I also like taking pictures. I don’t think there goes a day where I don’t take a picture. I especially like taking pictures of my family and friends to capture the moment. I also like to listen to music and dance around whenever I get the chance to. I think engaging with art can make you a little more of a complete human being, but not a whole lot. By engaging with art I think you are able to see how others express themselves and how you can too, but that can’t make you more of a complete human being. If anything it makes you more understanding of others and yourself.
I think art does matter. It’s from different art movements throughout history that have created social change in the United States. Today art is being used to promote gun violence, immigration, racism, sexism, and many other things. With art, we are able to tell stories and promote change across the country. If all art were to disappear our lives would be boring and bland. All of our clothes would look the same with plain colors and no designs. All the packagings in grocery stores would also be plain with just the product’s name and the nutrition label. There would also be no aesthetic appeal to the cities and neighborhoods. Without architecture, all the buildings would be created for just its form. The whole world would look plain and uniformed.
I agree with the quote. Through art, we are able to see the past and how much it’s changed throughout the years. As I said above without artists there would be no way for citizens like us to get our message across to promote change. So, a great nation needs great artists to continue improving themselves for what lies ahead.
For this semester, my classmates and I have gone through many different things. With the class being online and the pandemic going on I found it nice to have a class where I could just talk about my emotions and how I felt about everything going on. For the future art will always be an outlet from the “real” world. No matter what happens I always know that when it comes to expressing myself, in art I can do whatever I think is best for me. I can sing songs as loud as I want, dance to my heart’s content, make memories and capture them with photos, or paint whatever I want and however I want. To me, art will always be a place where I can find comfort.
